Doesn't Play Nicely - Drupal presentation @ DrupalSouth Wellington 2010

"Doesn't Play Nicely" is a presentation given at DrupalSouth Wellington 2010.

Providing technical support to Drupal developers and implementors, there are plenty of examples of module conflicts you get to see. I decided to throw together a handful of examples in order to stimulate some reflection amongst the developers in the audience could help avoid such conflicts in the future.

Then I spent a few weeks hitting the issue queues looking for common threads, and put together a list of the most popular conflict types I saw. Some other good examples came up in the presentation discussion too!

The result was this presentation, which I started suddenly nervous that I was going to be preaching to the choir - a room full of developers who'd probably already hit half the same issues. But it turned out to be a pretty fun chat after all!

The aim was to stimulate conversation on ways we can be aware of common places for conflicts (esp D6) and work to ensure that their own contributions avoided these and helped other modules play nicely. The resulting discussion was quite informative, along with some sharing of debugging techniques and the ways developers explore what's happening under the hood in Drupal.

Much thanks to everyone who participated, it was fun!

It's an S5 presentation, use your → right → arrow → to → page → through :)
